Tip Of The Week: The perfect shave.

There are literally thousands of websites dedicated to shaving ones legs (and other parts!). Some of the advice works while some of it is down right ridiculous. Lucky for you, my staff and I have put a few techniques to the test to come up with the perfect how-to get touchable smooth legs. (Note: We’re only dealing with legs here, for other parts; you may want to check here or here.)

1. Never dry shave. Always try to shave in the shower or in the bathtub. The longer you soak the softer the hair will become making it so much easier to shave. The most successful shavers in our group saved shaving for last.

2. Exfoliate. Most women (and men) skip this part, but it is so important! Use a loofah, body brush or bath gloves to gently exfoliate the area. This removes any dead skin covering the hair follicle that may otherwise prevent you from achieving the smoothest possible shave.

3. Always use a shaving cream or gel. Ladies, I beg you, PUT THE SOAP DOWN!!!! Soap can dry your skin and usually doesn’t provide enough coverage, increasing the chance of uncomfortable (and bloody) nicks and cuts.

4. Shave in the direction of the hair. I know, I know, going against the hair seems to work better – but trust me if you use a really sharp razor you’ll get a close shave without the risk.

5. Be very careful around the knees and ankles.

6. Stay away from lotions and creams that may irritate newly shaven skin. Try 100% Aloe Vera gel instead. It soothes and softens without irritating the skin.

7. Make sure you get someone (preferably that special someone in your life) look over your handy work, make sure you didn’t miss a spot. (O.K. that’s not really a step – but he’ll appreciate the gesture – trust me)
